Why You Lose Hair When Stressed

lose hairYou may have noticed that you tend to lose hair when you are under stress. But what is stress and why is it associated with losing hair?

Stress is defined as a demand upon mental or physical energy. So it means that whether you feel extreme anxiety or your body is subjected to intense physical demands, this can manifest in various ways.

When there is too much demand on mental or physical energy, the body responds by activating specific hormones. The hormones respond by initiating various processes that best allow you to cope with these excessive requirements. Other hormones shut down bodily functions that are perceived to be less important. Reproduction, growth, immune system, blood flow to the skin and scalp are all put on hold. This is why long term stress can make you prone to illness, skin ailments, and even hair loss.

When under too much stress, you can lose hair because of inadequate blood flow and oxygenation to the scalp. This can also trigger the fall out phase or telogen phase of the hair growth cycle. Initially, this may not be noticeable. But after a few weeks or so, the hairs in the resting phase fall out all at once. Thus, stress can really make you lose hair.

What can you do to deal with stress? While some amount of day to day stress is normal, try to avoid stress overload. Learn to deal with pressures and new challenges without having to go overboard. If you are a busy person, consider cutting down on activities and stick to the more important ones. Manage your expectations and be realistic. Make it a point to stay relaxed, do activities that are calming to you, and eat healthy.

If you lose hair because of stress, this is only temporary. When physical stress or mental anxiety has passed, the body will eventually try to return to its normal processes. However, this can be quite difficult and may happen over a long period. You need to be patient and during this time, be extra gentle to your locks.
